The first Wonders school-age program to be located in an elementary school, Wonders at Somerset provides before- and after-school care and the WOW! After School Enrichment Activities Program. Serving children 5 to 12 years of age, the before- and after- school program provides full time, part time, and drop-in programs. The WOW! program offers 12-weeks of classes that focus on the creative arts, math and sciences, and sports.

Scroll down to find descriptions of enrichment classes being offered this fall. Each class will offer 7 to 12 week sessions from February to April. Classes will be canceled during MCPS school closure and Early Release days. Any cancelled classes will be made up at the end of the semester. Arrival, Child Care Services and Dismissal Procedures
Children will gather in the APR at school dismissal where they will be greeted by Ebony Ellis, Program Director for Somerset Extended Day. Enrichment teachers will meet their students in the APR and escort them to class. After class, children enrolled in Wonders will return to the extended day program.
Children are not enrolled in Wonders for the day have two options:
1. parents can pay for WOW Before class child care and have their child attend Wonders from 3:00-3:30 pm
2. parents can bring their child to the class when it begins at 3:30 pm.
All Enrichment classes will end at 4:30 pm and children that do not attend Wonders and that are not registered for WOW After class child care are to be picked up by their parents in the enrichment classroom by 4:30pm. A late pick up fee will be charged if you arrive after 4:35 pm.
If a parent is unable to bring their child back to Somerset to attend their Enrichment class they can sign their child up for Before WOW Child Care or use an occasional Before WOW Drop-in service. The fees for each option are listed below:

Course Descriptions:
Dance Hip Hop/Street Jam
Do you love to jump for joy? Does music make you want to dance? Are you curious about learning how to “talk” with your body?” In this fun class students will work on a variety of hip hop, music video and jazz dance. We will cover basic skills with emphasis on placement of the body. Focus on learning a routine and performing. Come experience the wonderful world of dance.

Math Olympics
Students will explore complex mathematical problems in a cooperative, collaborative setting. Students learn to approach real life math problems (beyond simple computations) in a variety of ways. There are periodic competitions that will take place which are set by the Mathematical Olympiads Organizations.

Tae Kwon Do
Flying Kick is dedicated to bringing the benefits of the martial arts to children and families in a safe, positive and caring manner, and has been teaching in schools for over 15 years. Students will build physical and mental strength, agility and balance through practicing the traditional forms and techniques of Tae Kwon Do. Flying Kick students also learn the importance of Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance and Self-Control while developing an Indomitable Spirit.

Knitting Club
Learn to knit with needles! You will learn the knit, purl and stockinet stitches, how to read a pattern, and how to knit both with circular needles (in a magic loop) and with straight needles. After creating a ‘peace pouch’ you will have the opportunity to choose your own projects such as a scarf, or a hat, or fingerless gloves. Your materials fee will cover all materials including needles, yarn, and a binder to organize your current (and future) knitting patterns.
You get to keep your needles and binder and knitted projects!

Young Rembrandts
Join the Young Rembrandts drawing class as you create eye catching illustrations, including portraits, still life and graphics. Besides strengthening your drawing and coloring skills, you will also learn about art history as we present lessons featuring master artists Gilbert Stuart and Picasso. Your funny bone will be tickled as well as you are exposed to the art of cartooning!

Club Fun
Intramural sports league. This fall season marks the sixth year of Club Fun Intramural Sports. This year we will offer Volley Ball, Soccer and Dodge Ball. The games will be held on Friday afternoons for children grades 3-5. The children will be transported to and from games on our Wonders bus. All games will be held at various Wonders Sites. Families are welcome to attend games, and may pick their children up at the site of an away game. Club Fun is about promoting sportsmanship, team work, skill development, social interaction with peer groups, and having fun.

LEGO Robotics
LEGO® Robotics is our core class, where beginners learn to build and program robots using LEGO® Education’s award-winning WeDo robotics and programming software.
Students follow step-by-step on-screen instructions to build their robots, and then build a suggested program to get their robots working.
